Decided to travel to Korea? Congrats!

Now it’s time to start planning. You’ll probably use the usual global booking apps, but planning a trip to Korea requires a few insider hacks. Here are the practical pro-tips that will save you time and money, and seriously level up your travel vibe!

When hunting for flights on global platforms, don’t just type in “Seoul.” You need to check which airport you’re landing at. Here’s what every local will tell you.

1. Flashy but Busy: Incheon International Airport (ICN)

This is Korea’s main gateway, boasting world-class scale. If you want the ultimate duty-free shopping and grand facilities, it’s perfect! But it’s huge and packed with crowds. Getting through immigration and heading downtown can seriously drain your energy.

💡 Note: Flying direct from the Americas or Europe? Unless you’re departing from within Asia, you’ll almost certainly land at ICN. There’s really no other choice.

2. The Ultimate Time-Saver: Gimpo International Airport (GMP)

Most long-haul flights land at Incheon. But if you’re hopping over to Korea from nearby Asian spots like Japan, Taiwan, or China? Definitely check if there’s a flight landing at GMP.

The biggest game-changer is the travel time to downtown. Taking the Airport Railroad (AREX), Incheon to Seoul Station takes about an hour. But from Gimpo? Just 20 to 25 minutes. It’s a massive lifesaver that spares you the fatigue of dragging heavy luggage across town.

3. Visiting Busan (PUS)? The ‘Multi-City’ Cheat Code

Busan is a must-visit packed with ocean vibes and killer seafood. However, Seoul and Busan sit diagonally on opposite ends of the country (Northwest vs. Southeast).

If you plan to hit both, strongly consider booking a “Multi-City” ticket: Fly into Seoul (ICN/GMP) ➔ Fly out of Busan (Gimhae Airport).

A one-way KTX bullet train ticket from Seoul to Busan costs around 59,800 KRW ($45 USD). The round-trip travel time alone eats up 5 to 6 hours. Don’t waste time going all the way back to Seoul just to catch a flight home. You’ll save both expensive transit fares and precious vacation time!

💡 Heads-up for flying out of Busan: Gimhae Airport mostly handles routes to Japan, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. There are no direct long-haul flights to the Americas or Europe. You’ll need to book a flight with a layover at an Asian hub. But if you’re pairing your Korea trip with another Asian country, it’s an absolute no-brainer!
